Hello, Spring. The warm weather is finally here.
To properly greet it and to make your yard ready to show itself in the impending warm season, you should see how your lawn fares after the winter and give it a nice make-over. That means, first and foremost, checking for bald spots and over-seeding where necessary. Frankly, after a long period of cold, bold spots are a bit unavoidable, whether that’s due to neglect, or mold, or too much shade and so on. But that’s nothing a bit of attention and dedicated lawn care can’t handle. A lot of people are looking into it right now, but there seems to be some amount of confusion about the best way to go (judging from the questions we have received on the subject). To clarify things up, here’s what you need to know.First of all, and considering the Texas dry climate (whether you live in Arlington or Kennedale or whatever), don’t even think about over-seeding without investing some time first into preparing the soil. That means loosening or topdressing, about a few inches deep, and then you can seed heavily and apply a generous layer of slow-release fertilizer. Your lawn care provider will take care of all that. Then, they will apply another fertilizer (starter fertilizer) a few weeks after germination to make sure they give your turf the best start.
For the soil loosening, some say that about any number of garden tools will do and that there’s no need for highly specific equipment. But asking your lawn care provider to do it in a professional manner will properly break up the existing clamped up soil, so they can transform it into a smooth bed just right for the planting of new seeds. To avoid having an unleveled lawn afterwards, it’s best if you ask your lawn care company to remove preexisting plants before loosening and topdressing (with soil or soil and compost mix).
Usually, we recommend over-seeding (or just seeding) the ground to be done in late summer and early autumn, after things calm down a bit in terms of growing boost and there’s less weed completion for your grass to face. But if the bare spots in your turf are visible, spring seeding is an understandable lawn care necessity, so go for it. Your lawn care provider will do it right and thus you’ll establish a solid foundation for your lawn for the warm season to come.
