If you have taken action and put out your spring pre emergent, well done!
Now it’s time to start thinking about the first fertilization of the year for your turf. The first feeding is the most important feeding of the year. Your turf is trying to come out of dormancy, it’s greening up, the root system active, so it’s time to give it the nutrients it needs to push through and get established. Many people want to use a high nitrogen, fast acting fertilizer to really green up their lawn fast, but we recommend staying away from those. It is true that they will green up your lawn fast, but it is a very short term solution that does not provide long term nutrition.
You need to go with a slow release fertilizer, something that will feed your lawn the next six to eight weeks until its time for the next round of fertilizer. The health of your lawn is like a marathon, not s sprint. It might take a little longer for your lawn to really green up with a slow release fertilizer, but a well fed lawn is going to be thicker, greener, and healthier for much longer!
