Why you should stay away from weed and feeds.

If you have kept up with our videos, then you know we are not big on “weed and feeds”. When it comes to the first fertilization of the year, things are no different. We recommend staying away from those products.

It is tempting to go with a weed and feed. We think it is saving us time and money, and that we are killing two birds with one stone by only having to apply one product. The problem with a weed and feed is that you are spreading and herbicide over your entire lawn, which is completely unnecessary. Herbicides only need to be used to spot treat existing weeds, that is it. If there is an area in your lawn that does not have weeds…then it does not need an herbicide. Also, with a weed and feed it is impossible to keep the granules from spreading around your trees and into your flowerbeds. Most plants, flowers and trees DO NOT like herbicides…

The best thing to do is to separate the two applications. Buy a high quality fertilizer and apply it by itself. Then come in with a high quality LIQUID (much more effective than granular) post emergent and ONLY apply to weeds that you can see. This is how you control what is and is not getting an herbicide. That is what the pros do, and you should too. This will give you far better results than any weed and feed product, WITHOUT having to unnecessarily spread herbicides all over your lawn.
