Its almost May and my lawn has yet to green up and fill in...why?

Its the end of April, and there are still many lawns (both St. Augustine and Bermuda) that really don’t look all that great. Typically this time of year the grass is green, lush and thriving. So whats going on?

While there definitely could be some other issues, the biggest culprit right now is weather. This has been a roller coaster of a spring when it comes to temperatures. Just in the last two weeks we have had days in the 80s, followed by nights in 30s, followed by days in the 40s etc.

While the mild spring has been nice, it has not been very “lawn friendly”. Soil temperatures are what determine when your turf comes out of dormancy, and when it goes back into dormancy for the winter. For most warm season turf, like St. Augustine and Bermuda, the threshold is between 60 and 65 degrees. The average soil temperature in our area over the last five days has been 61 degrees…which means you grass is kind of in limbo, not really knowing what to do.

We all know that the warm weather is on its way, its only a matter of time. So hang in there and have patience, your lawn WILL eventually look like its supposed to this time of year!
