The determining factor on whether a pre emergent will be effective is soil temperatures. That is what we are up against, that is what we are racing with. All weeds have different times that they germinate depending on the soil temperatures at any given time.
Right now, we are worried about summer weeds like crabgrass. Crabgrass is one of those weeds that you DON’T want to deal with after it comes up. Crabgrass seeds do not fully take off and germinate until soil temperatures are at 70-75 degrees. The average soil temperature right now in DFW is 60 degrees. That means that we are still in the window of opportunity, and we still have time to kill those weeds before they germinate. That is just crabgrass, many other summer weeds germinate at higher temperatures of 75+ degrees.
Every day the soil temperatures are increasing. By the end of this month, it will be TOO LATE and you will be dealing with weeds the rest of the year.
Act now, and have no regrets!
