Right now, we're in between the two most important applications for any lawn care program. We just finished fall pre-emergent (applied in September, October, and early November), and in about a month and a half, we'll be starting spring pre-emergent. So what, if anything, should you be doing right now for your Midlothian or Prosper lawn?
This time of year, we highly recommend a potassium application—also called a soil enhancement treatment. While often overlooked, this winter fertilization is one of the most beneficial treatments you can give your North Texas lawn.
Your turf needs high levels of potassium to develop a strong root system. Potassium helps your roots grow deeper and branch more extensively, giving your turf a solid foundation to build on.
Benefits of Winter Potassium Treatment:
It's best to have potassium down by the end of December, before the coldest part of winter arrives. This gives your lawn time to absorb the nutrients and strengthen roots before experiencing the harshest weather conditions.
The product we use at Vista Lawn and Pest is called K-Mag (potassium-magnesium sulfate), but there are a number of similar potassium fertilizers available if you're treating your own lawn. Look for products labeled as "potassium fertilizer" or "0-0-X" where X represents the potassium content.
This application is highly recommended for any lawn, but it is CRUCIAL for St. Augustine grass. St. Augustine doesn't tolerate cold winters well and is naturally prone to fungal diseases—it needs all the help it can get!
