Mowing is a big part of the battle against weeds.
But it is not just about kill your existing weeds, it is also the absolute best way to prevent weeds outside of using a pre-emergent.
Weeds need water, nutrients and sunlight to germinate and grow. Thick, healthy turf prevents that from happening because it provides a canopy that blocks sunlight from reaching the soil. Strong, healthy root systems consume more nutrients and water, which makes for a tough competition for weeds that are after those same nutrients and water.
Weekly mowing is REQUIRED if you want a thick, dense, healthy lawn that prevents weeds. Anything less than that puts a lot of stress on your turf and will weaken it.
Mowing at the right height is also important for weed prevention. Mowing too short allows more sunlight to break through the canopy and reach those weed seeds. Keep bermuda between 2-2 1/2", and St. Augustine 3"+.
