Why We Only Use LED Lights
Here at Vista Lawn and Pest, we ONLY work with LED lights for Christmas installations in Midlothian and Prosper. Why is that? They cost quite a bit more than incandescent lights, so what's the benefit?
There are a number of reasons as to why we prefer LED lights over incandescent, but here are the two primary reasons:
Reason 1: Dramatically Longer Lifespan
The lifespan of LED lights is considerably longer. The lifespan of incandescent bulbs is typically in the hundreds of hours (one to two seasons at best), whereas the lifespan of LED lights is in the tens of thousands of hours. That will give you years and years and years of use!
Incandescent bulb lifespan:
- 500-1,000 hours typical
- 1-2 Christmas seasons maximum
- Bulbs burn out frequently
- Constant replacement needed
- Entire strands often fail
- Annual repurchasing required
LED bulb lifespan:
- 25,000-50,000 hours typical
- 10-20+ Christmas seasons possible
- Extremely rare bulb failures
- Minimal maintenance required
- Investment pays for itself quickly
- One-time purchase for many years
The math:If incandescent lights last 2 seasons and LEDs last 15+ seasons, you'll buy incandescent lights 7-8 times to equal one LED purchase. Even with higher upfront costs, LEDs save money long-term.
Reason 2: 90% Less Energy Usage
LED lights use 90% LESS energy than incandescent lights. This obviously means you will save money on your electric bill during the Christmas season, but it also really helps simplify the installation of your lights.
Energy consumption comparison:
- Incandescent: 7 watts per 25-bulb strand
- LED: 0.7 watts per 25-bulb strand
- Savings: 90% reduction in electricity costs
Real-world electric bill impact:Running 1,000 incandescent bulbs for 8 hours daily throughout December:
- Incandescent cost: ~$25-30 for the month
- LED cost: ~$2-3 for the month
- Savings: $20-25+ per month
Simplified Installation with LEDs
LED lights use so little energy that in many cases you can connect up to 300 bulbs on one power outlet. On the other hand, 300 incandescent bulbs would require some extensive planning to stay within an outlet's circuit capacity and would require running extension cords to numerous outlets around the house.
Installation advantages of LEDs:
- Connect many more strands together
- Use fewer outlets around house
- Reduce extension cord needs
- Simplify power planning
- Lower risk of tripped breakers
- Cleaner, easier installation
Incandescent installation challenges:
- Typically only 3-5 strands can connect together
- Must spread load across multiple outlets
- Extension cords running everywhere
- Risk of overloading circuits
- May trip breakers during use
- Complex planning required
Additional LED Benefits
Beyond lifespan and energy savings:
- More durable (plastic bulbs don't shatter)
- Stay cool to the touch (safer)
- Brighter, more vibrant colors
- Better color consistency strand-to-strand
- Weather-resistant construction
- Retain brightness over time
Safety advantages:
- Reduced fire risk (cool operation)
- No hot bulbs to cause burns
- Lower electrical load reduces hazards
- More reliable in cold weather
- Less likely to damage property
The Investment That Pays Off
If you are in the market for Christmas lights this year, LEDs are hands down the way to go!
Why LEDs are worth the cost:
- Save money on electricity every season
- No replacement costs for many years
- Easier installation process
- Better appearance and reliability
- Safer for your home and family
- Higher resale value if selling lights
Initial cost comparison:
- Incandescent strand: $3-5
- LED strand: $8-15
- Break-even: 2-3 seasons
- After that: Pure savings
