Thinking about hanging your own Christmas lights this year? Kadie shares the most common DIY holiday lighting disasters she hears about over the phone, and what to do instead.
Every holiday season, our office gets calls from homeowners in Prosper, Mansfield, and across North Texas who tried to put up their own Christmas lights and ran into trouble. We asked Kadie to walk through the DIY disasters she hears about most.
One of the biggest ones is overloading outlets. Plugging too many strands into one outlet can definitely blow a breaker, and then you are troubleshooting your electrical panel instead of enjoying your lights.
Store-bought lights are not industrial grade, and they do not last as long. They go out, and when half of a strand goes out on one side, you end up having to do the whole thing all over again.
Kadie's take on ladders is simple: she is not getting up on one. It is too dangerous, especially when people are doing it by themselves or at night after work. Add in the cold, plus ice, and it is a recipe for getting hurt.
Some mistakes go beyond a strand going dark. When you put up lights by stapling or nailing them in, there is always a chance you go through the wires. That can fray the wires and create a fire hazard. Trying to keep lights up with staples and nails can also damage your house, including the paint.
When Vista Lawn and Pest installs Christmas lights, we do not staple. Depending on the job, we use super glue or magnets. That keeps your home in good shape year to year.
If you want to avoid all of this, Kadie's recommendation is to call a professional. A crew that does this regularly knows how to stay safe and do everything the right way, so you do not have to climb a ladder in the cold or risk damaging your home.
