Your lawn needs a half inch of water, 3-4 times per week. But how long should you actually run your sprinklers to get there? The answer is different for every yard, so we're breaking down exactly how to figure it out for yours.
For my sprinkler system, its:
20 minutes per zone for spray heads.
45-50 minutes per zone for rotors (yes, that is a long time...it should be for rotors).
That will give me a half inch on MY lawn from MY sprinkler system...YOUR system is going to be DIFFERENT! Water pressure, nozzle type, and zone layout all change the math, so copying someone else's run times can leave your lawn overwatered or underwatered without you realizing it.
So how can you determine watering times for your sprinkler system? It's quite easy. Place a few straight-sided cans (tuna cans work great) around your yard before running a zone. Time how long it takes to collect a half inch of water in the can, and that's your run time for that zone.
Do this once per zone, since spray heads and rotors will take very different amounts of time. Once you have your numbers, you'll know exactly how long to run each zone without any guesswork.
We'll explain everything in the video below.
