I recently posted a video about finding good deals on lawn mowers this time of year, and someone asked what kind of mowers we use at Vista Lawn and Pest—or what I'd recommend for homeowners. This is actually a question I get asked a lot, so let's talk about it.
To answer directly: we use Toro commercial-grade push mowers. However, I would not recommend them for the average homeowner. They're expensive, and frankly, they're way more mower than most people need.
Why Commercial Mowers Aren't for Everyone
Our mowers need to survive being used five days a week, eight hours a day. That's a completely different use case than what homeowners in Midlothian, Prosper, or anywhere else need. If you're mowing your own lawn, you need something that can handle a few hours of use once per week—not the heavy-duty equipment we put through the wringer on a daily basis.
Spending money on commercial-grade equipment when you don't need it is just throwing money away. Save that budget for something that actually makes sense for your situation.
My Personal Recommendation
I can't speak for all residential-grade mowers because I haven't used them all. But if I was buying one for myself, it would be a Honda.
Here's why: way back when we first started VistaTurf and I was mowing yards myself, we couldn't afford to buy the more expensive commercial-grade mowers. We tried several brands, and although Hondas cost a little more upfront than some competitors, we were able to get quite a bit more life out of them than some of the other brands we tested. They also delivered a great cut, which matters when you're trying to make lawns look their best.
That experience stuck with me. From my personal use, Hondas proved reliable, durable, and worth the slightly higher price tag.
Other Brands Can Work Too
That said, I'm sure many other brands produce great mowers as long as they're taken care of. Proper maintenance goes a long way regardless of what you buy. Keep up with oil changes, blade sharpening, air filter replacements, and general upkeep, and most decent mowers will serve you well.
But from my experience? If I'm buying a residential mower for my own use, I'm going with Honda every time. For homeowners across Waxahachie, Midlothian, Prosper, and the DFW area looking for a reliable machine that will last, that's my honest recommendation.
