Now is the time to aerate. If you've been putting it off, consider this your reminder to get it scheduled.
You've probably heard that aerations are strictly a spring and fall service—and that's true. But while most people understand the seasonal timing, fewer homeowners consider the specific reason temperature plays such an important role in aeration success.
What Happens During Core Aeration
When you perform a core aeration, you're poking holes in the ground and removing small plugs of soil. This process does exactly what it's supposed to do: it relieves compaction and opens up pathways for water, oxygen, and nutrients to reach your grass roots.
However, there's a temporary trade-off. Pulling those cores exposes your turf's root system. Under normal conditions, your lawn recovers quickly and benefits greatly from the process. But if you aerate during extreme temperatures—whether hot or cold—you put unwanted stress on those exposed roots and risk sending your lawn into shock.
The Ideal Temperature Range
For homeowners in Midlothian, Prosper, and throughout North Texas, the magic number range is 70 to 90 degrees. This isn't set in stone—you can go a little above or below—but staying within this window gives your lawn the best chance to recover quickly and thrive after aeration.
During spring and fall in DFW, we typically see stretches of weather that fall right into this ideal range. That's why these seasons are prime time for aeration. Summer's triple-digit heat and winter's potential freezes make those seasons too risky for exposing root systems.
What If You Miss the Window?
Life gets busy, and sometimes the ideal aeration window passes before you get around to it. If that happens, you have an alternative: liquid aeration.
Unlike core aeration, liquid aeration isn't temperature sensitive. It works by applying a solution that breaks down soil compaction chemically rather than mechanically. You won't get the same physical hole-punching action, but it's a solid option when temperatures aren't cooperating. We'll cover liquid aeration in more detail in another video.
Don't Wait—Conditions Are Right
The temperatures over the next couple of weeks look great for aerating across Waxahachie, Midlothian, Prosper, and surrounding areas. If your lawn needs aeration, now is the time to act. Your turf will thank you for it.
